As well as achievement of over 200 individual deliverables and projects, UnitedHealth UK and the NHS Northamptonshire team achieved a number of key outcomes:
Savings Initiatives
UnitedHealth UK assisted the PCT in creating a structured process for evaluating and overseeing savings initiatives to support the Quality Innovation Productivity and Prevention (QIPP) framework. We provided in depth medical cost analysis and benchmarking to drive identification of savings opportunities and developed initiatives to release savings.
Acute Invoice Validation (AIV)
UnitedHealth UK oversaw the implementation of robust and comprehensive acute invoice validation services, combined with acute trust contracting review and contract management services. We developed an automated tool, licensed to NHS Northamptonshire, and provided comprehensive training and support to the team.
Data Analysis
UnitedHealth UK worked with the PCT to maximise efficiencies in the use and storage of data to enable commissioners to have easy access to the reports and information they need to ensure effective performance management. We developed the infrastructure to support these services and providing the training to PCT staff to be able to carry it out.
Performance Management & Contracting
UnitedHealth UK lead the negotiation of acute trust contracts representing over £330 million of health cost and provided ongoing performance management services for the acute contracts.
Health Needs Assessment
Throughout the contract, UnitedHealth UK conducted a number of health needs assessment and health equity assessment reports in areas such as sexual health, maternity services, CHD and COPD. We undertook care pathway analysis, providing support to modify care pathways to improve the quality and efficiency of care and the patient experience.
Patient & Public Engagement
In conjunction with Picker Institute, UnitedHealth UK developed the NHS Northamptonshire strategy for patient and public engagement. This included feedback gathered from an extensive patient and public experience survey, as well as detailed stakeholder and key partnership analysis.
Creation of an Integrated Social Marketing Function
UnitedHealth UK developed the NHS Northamptonshire strategy for communications, engagement and social marketing. The team subsequently recruited, mentored and coached a new social marketing team in areas of smoking cessation, Chlamydia, obesity and stroke.
Development of a Staff Worksite Health Promotion Programme
Drawing upon our US expertise, we developed and implemented a successful staff worksite health promotion programme called thrive. In year one thrive achieved around 90% awareness and over 65% uptake in a personalised wellness programme designed to help staff reduce weight, BMI and cholesterol levels.
Knowledge Transfer
UnitedHealth UK experts from the UK and US sat desk by desk with NHS Northamptonshire colleagues. Projects were developed and implemented by multi-disciplinary teams from both organisations in order to maximise opportunities for learning and development.
UnitedHealth UK also hosted a series of ‘brown bag lunch’ learning seminars and ‘strategic summits’ designed to show case best practice on key principles such as evidence based medicine and use of data and technology to drive innovation in healthcare.
